Main Research:
Prof. Albrecht's research interests cover various legal, criminological and policy topics ranging from sentencing theory, juvenile crime, drug policies, environmental crime and organized crime, evaluation research and systems of criminal sanctions. He has published, co-published and edited various books, among them volumes on sentencing, day-fine systems, recidivism, child abuse and neglect, drug policies, research on victimisation, etc.
Academic Background:
Prof. Albrecht currently is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg/Germany (MPI) since March 1997. He teaches criminal law, criminal justice and criminology at the University of Freiburg. Prof. Albrecht was born in Esslingen/Germany in 1950. He studied law at the universities of Tübingen and Freiburg. At the Freiburg university he completed the Ph.D. in 1979 and obtained in 1991 the venia legendi for criminal law, juvenile criminal law, criminology, and prison law. From 1977 until 1991 Prof. Albrecht was a researcher fellow at the MPI. 1991 he accepted an offer to lecture criminal law and criminology at the Law Faculty of the University of Konstanz. In 1993 he was offered the chair for criminal law, juvenile criminal law and criminology at the University of Dresden where he stayed until 1997. In 1996 he was elected as a director of the MPI. In April 2000, Prof. Albrecht was given the status of a guest professor at the Center for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice of the China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing/PR China, in April 2001 the status of a guest professor at the Law Faculty of Hainan University/PR China and in January 2004 the status of a guest professor at the Law Faculty of Renmin University of China/PR China. In May 2003 the Life Membership at Clare Hall College, University Cambridge/UK, and in May 2004 the University of Teheran professorship and permanent faculty membership of the Faculty of Law of Qom High Education Center, Teheran/Iran, were conferred to Prof. Albrecht. In March 2005, the Law Faculty of the University of Pécs/Hungary awarded him the honorary doctorate. For several years now Prof. Albrecht has also been a guest professor at a number of universities in China – from May 2005 at the Law Faculty of Wuhan University, from May 2006 at the Law Faculty of Beijing Normal University and from May 2008 at the China University for Political Science and Law.
Prof. Albrecht is one of the principal investigators and spokesperson of the International Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment (REMEP).

Prof. Albrecht is a member of the editorial board of the journal F3 – Freedom from Fear and of the advisory boards of the journals "Suchttherapie", "International Journal of Policy and Practice", "Police Practice and Research – An International Journal", "Studies on Crime and Crime Prevention", "Revista de Derecho Penal y Criminología", European Journal of Criminology as well as "Crime & Justice International". He is rédacteur associé of the journal "Revue internationale de criminologie et de police technique et scientifique".
Prof. Albrecht is a member of the scientific council of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence, Bielefeld, as well as of the advisory board of the German National Academic Foundation. He is a corresponding member of the Centre for Criminology (KrimZ) and a member of the following national and international scientific organizations and societies: Kriminologische Gesellschaft (KrimG), GERN (Groupe Européen de Recherches sur les Normativités), European Society of Criminology, American Society of Criminology, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
