Academic Background:
Marc Engelhart was born in Stuttgart in 1976. After completing his secondary school education (Abitur) at Salier-Gymnasium in Waiblingen in 1996 und his military service as an air-land signaler, he took up the study of law at the University of Freiburg in 1997. In 1999/2000, he spent an academic year at the law faculty of the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom). During his studies, Marc Engelhart worked for Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Albin Eser and later at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law as a student assistant. He successfully completed his legal studies with the first state examination in law in early 2003. From 2003 to 2005, he completed his training in the judicial service (Referendariat) at the Freiburg district court (Landgericht Freiburg). As part of this legal apprenticeship, he was also a trainee at the international law department of the German Federal Ministry of Justice (Bundesministerium der Justiz) in Berlin.
From 2003 to 2009, Marc Engelhart held a research position at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, where he became responsible for the German section. He researched and wrote country reports on Germany for the Institute projects Criminal Liability of Leaders of Criminal Groups and Networks and Rethinking European Criminal Justice. In addition, he coordinated the project Judicial Training in China. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ulrich Sieber, he earned his doctorate on Corporate Criminal Liability and Compliance Measures. His doctoral thesis was published under the title Sanktionierung von Unternehmen und Compliance (Responsibility and Sanctioning of Corporations: The Role of Compliance Measures) for which he was distinguished with the Otto Hahn Medal in 2011 and honored with the prize of the Wirtschaftsstrafrechtliche Vereinigung (a German economic criminal law association) in 2012.
Marc Engelhart has been a practicing lawyer since 2006. From 2009 to 2011, he worked at an international corporate law firm in Stuttgart, where he specialized in questions of compliance and the corporate responsibility of companies and their leaders. Marc Engelhart returned to the Max Planck Institute in 2012 to accept a position as the head of section for business and economic criminal law. He continues to practice as an independent lawyer in Freiburg.
