Main Research:

Since 1996 Volker Grundies has headed the Freiburg Cohort Study. The following areas represent the main research within the scope of this project:

• Analysis of cohort data, especially concerning the separation of the main effects of age, period and cohort.
• Modelling of the dependency of delinquent behaviour on age (e.g. “group based trajectory models”).
• The probability of recidivism dependent on demographic characteristics and criminal history.
• Changes in the judicial sanctioning routine, especially regarding adolescents and young adults.

Academic Background:

Volker Grundies studied Physics at the University of Freiburg, graduating with a diploma in 1985. He worked as a scientific assistant up until 1990, earning a doctorate with a dissertation on "Neutron Deuteron Cross Sections" in 1991.

Since 1992 he has been research member of the Department of Criminology at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. Initially, he was responsible for the service and the expansion of the IT infrastructure as well as consulting PhD students concerning statistical methods. In 1996 Volker Grundies took over the Freiburg Cohort Study and at the same time reduced his responsibilities concerning the IT infrastructure.

He is also involved in the project Criminal Sanctions and Recidivism.
