Nandor Knust

Main Research:

Nandor Knust conducted the research project Criminal Law and Gacaca – Coming to Terms with the Rwandan Genocide by means of a Pluralistic Legal Model within the framework of his dissertation (supervisor: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ulrich Sieber).

Academic Background:

Nandor Knust was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He studied law at the universities of Frankfurt (state exam) and Paris (Maîtrise en droit international public). In 2004, he worked as a legal intern at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania. From 2004-2006, he carried out several field research visits to the Great Lakes Region of Africa, with a special focus on Rwanda. In 2004, he took up work as a research assistant in the Sub-Saharan Africa Section of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. In 2006, he joined the Institute's International Criminal Law Section as a researcher and also served as its interim head for six months. He was admitted to the International Max Planck Research School for Comparative Criminal Law in Freiburg as a PhD candidate in 2007 and completed his dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ulrich Sieber in 2011. He became head of the International Criminal Law Section in the same year.
