Main Research:

Teresa Manso conducts research in the field of comparative criminal law as well as on questions concerning the general part of criminal law. She carries out projects at the Institute and writes expert opinions dealing with various individual questions of Spanish criminal law, such as sentencing, the participation and criminal liability of offenders in complex criminal organizations, the principle of honor, and the criminal liability of incest. Regarding the general part, her current research focuses mainly on the question of the ignorance of law stemming from incriminating reasons (dissertation topic). This research focus is directed particularly towards the theoretical and practical analyses of cases in which the offender could not adhere to the legal norm due to his ignorance of law, but reasons nonetheless exist for his ignorance that may possibly lead to his incrimination. Other major interests are environmental criminal law within the context of money laundering in Germany and Spain as well as the fight against terrorism in Spain.

Academic Background:

Teresa Manso was born in 1971 in Vigo (Spain). She studied law from 1989 to 1994 at the Fundación Universitaria San Pablo CEU (University Complutense) in Madrid. In her final year (1993-1994), she voluntarily engaged in research activities, including the supervision of a weekly seminar on the case law of the Spanish Supreme Court.

After one year of doctoral study at the Autonomous University of Madrid under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. Enrique Bacigalupo, she went to Bonn in 1995 to acquire the necessary German language skills for her dissertation in criminal law and to complete a research stay. At the seminar in philosophy of law at the University of Bonn, she came under the tutelage of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Günther Jakobs, who was her mentor for many years. In 1996, she took on a position as research assistant. At the same time, she was employed in a law office in Sankt Augustin that specialized in German-Spanish legal relations.

In 1998, she completed the comparative law graduate program (mag. iur. comp.). Her thesis dealt with the subject "ignorance of law stemming from incriminating reasons" and was to serve as the basis for her later dissertation. Her thesis was translated into Spanish and also published as the second volume in a new series of short monographs (Cuadernos Luis Jiménez de Asúa) as well as in a series published by the Externado University of Columbia.

Since 2000, Teresa Manso has been working at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany. She started her career there as a research assistant in the Latin America section and later in the Spain and Portugal section. At the same time, she worked as a research assistant and later as researcher at the institute of criminal law and theory of law at the University of Freiburg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Frisch (until 1994). Her work consisted of the preparation of reports on Spanish criminal law.

In 2003, Teresa Manso took over the interim direction of the Spain and Portugal section at the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg, and she has headed the Spain section since 2005. Her main activities in the section include collaboration on comparative criminal law projects, preparation of expert opinions for practitioners, mentoring of guests, monitoring developments in Spanish law, as well as providing specialist support to the library. In the last few years, the main focus of her research has been her collaboration with fellow researchers on a visionary project of the Institute International Max Planck Information System for Comparative Criminal Law ("Virtual Institute"). In addition to her native language Spanish, Teresa Manso has a written and spoken command of German and English.
