Main Research:

Carina Tetal is head of the research project Criminal Sanction and Recidivism. The aim of this empirical study is to create a recidivism statistic based on type of offence, sanction and demographic characteristics such as age and sex. The project is conducted in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Jörg-Martin Jehle of the University of Göttingen and has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Furthermore, Carina Tetal is a researcher in the Freiburg Cohort Study. The aim of this study is to investigate, via official data, the emergence and evolution of crime, judicial reactions towards crime, and criminal careers. The Freiburg Cohort Study is a long-term project, which, due to its specific cohort design and its extensive period of evaluation, is unique in Germany.

Academic Background:

Carina Tetal was born in Austria in 1959. She studied Sociology, Ethnology, History and Mathematics at the University of Freiburg, graduating in Sociology, Ethnology and History with a Magister Artium and a Diploma Baccalaureus in Mathematics. Since 1989 she is a staff member of the criminological department of the Max-Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. In 1996/1997 and 1999/2000 Carina Tetal was furthermore working at the Law Faculty of the University of Konstanz, contributing to the feasibility studies concerning criminal sanctions and recidivism, a conjoint project with the University of Göttingen, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Justice.

At the Max-Planck Institute Carina Tetal is a researcher in the Freiburg Cohort Study within the scope of which she earned a doctorate with a dissertation on Patterns of Offending Behaviour. Since 2007 she is head of the project Criminal Sanction and Recidivism.
