Academic Background:
Dr. iur.; born in 1946 in Gliwice (Poland). Studied law and criminology at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow (Poland), Bar-Ilan University (Israel), and Freiburg. 1976 awarded doctorate from University of Freiburg for a dissertation on Polish criminal procedure. She took a position at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg in 1971 and has been head of the section Eastern, Central, and Southeastern Europe since 1978.
Academic activities and fostering contacts with representatives of Eastern European criminal law:
Since the mid-1970s, Ewa Weigend has maintained close ties with criminal law academics at all major Polish universities. She supervises both academically and personally the numerous scholarship holders and guest researchers from Poland and other Eastern European countries who come to the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg. Ewa Weigend's contribution to German-Polish cooperation in recent decades is abundantly apparent in her numerous publications.
Her presentation of Polish criminal legislation enacted after the political changes of 1989 offers a comprehensive, in-depth overview of current legal developments in one of the newest Member States of the European Union.
Since the late 1970s, Ewa Weigend has held lectures at the Universities of Cracow and Warsaw almost every year and has been engaged in academic discussion with Polish criminal law experts from the Universities of Wrocław, Poznań, Toruń, and Gdańsk.
