In her dissertation The Reintegration of Young Offenders Released from Prison: Between Dependence and Autonomy, Elke Wienhausen-Knezevic assesses events that may act as turning points in the lives of young sexual and violent offenders released from prison, as well as the role personal initiative can have on successful societal reintegration. Of particular interest to the study is an age-specific comparison between young offenders and adult offenders on the question of predisposed “desistence” factors.
Academic Background:
Elke Wienhausen-Knezevic studied various courses in sociology, psychology and criminology at the University of Munich. She completed her sociology degree in 2008 with a thesis on juvenile graffiti offenders. After working for a year in the public relations department of a large company, she decided to undertake a master’s degree in criminology at the University of Greifswald, from which she graduated in November 2010.
During her master’s degree Elke Wienhausen-Knezevic obtained work experience at the University of Munich Hospital’s psychiatric clinic. She also assisted the Max Planck Institute in an evaluative study on Sexual Offenders in the Social Therapeutic Institutions of the Free State of Saxony. Since November 2009, Elke Wienhausen-Knezevic has been employed as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law to assist in aforesaid project on sexual offenders in prisons in Saxony.
