Main Research:
As head of the research projects Sexual Offenders in the Social Therapeutic Institutions of the Free State of Saxony and Juvenile Sexual Offenders in the Correctional Treatment Facilities of the Free State of Saxony, Gunda Wößner is primarily engaged with the evaluation of social-therapeutic treatment for dangerous offenders and the analysis of relevant relapse criteria. Another research focus includes the evaluation of electronic monitoring in the correctional facilities of Baden-Württemberg. Her research interests include:
- sexual and violent offending
- offender treatment
- prognosis and reoffending
- electronic monitoring
- developmental tasks and developmental disorders (juvenile delinquency)
- victimology.
Academic Background:
Upon completing her secondary studies, Gunda Wößner studied psychology at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg i. Br. from 1991 through to 1998. From 1994 to 1997, she worked as a student assistant for the Department of Criminology at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. After graduating in 1998, she interned at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, Washington, D.C., where she focused on diagnostics and interventions among juvenile victims of sexual abuse and juvenile sexual offenders. In 2000, Gunda Wößner briefly took up employment at the Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene (IGPP) in Freiburg to organize the 43rd convention of the Parapsychological Association. In 2001, she began work on her doctoral thesis at the Max Planck Institute, developing a sexual offender typology. In 2005, with the help of a re-entry bursary from the Vice-Chancellor and the Women’s Office of the Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, she was able to complete her doctoral thesis. In the spring of 2005, Gunda Wößner took up employment at the Westfälische Wilhelms University in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In August 2006, Gunda Wößner returned to the Criminology Department of the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg. In addition, she is the Institute's Equal Opportunity Officer.
Additional professional activities:
In addition to her academic work, Gunda Wößner completed training in client-centered counseling at the Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Gesprächspsychotherapie (Society for Scientific Client-Centered Psychotherapy). She has been enrolled in a vocational training program for psychotherapy (with an emphasis on behavioral therapy) since 2005.
Gunda Wößner is a referee for the "Monatsschrift für Kriminologie und Strafrechtsreform" and for "Punishment and Society."
She was a counselor for the archdiocese Freiburg's expert discussion "Supervision after sexual violation" as well as member of the "Roundtable against Sexual Abuse" (study group III) of the Federal Government, Germany.
