Guest researcher with own funds or with outside financing
This conception presumes that you take care of the financing of your stay on your own.
Applications for a stay longer than 5 days with own funds should be sent to:

Your written application has to include (see uploading fields in the form):
- curriculum vitae (Please use the template from Europass)
- passport photograph
- list of publications
- research proposal:
stay shorter than 1 month => a one-page proposal is sufficient;
stay longer than 4 weeks => a two- to three page proposal is expected.
All documents should be as up-to-date as possible.
If you intend to apply for a scholarship of another financier or in case that you have already filed such an application, please proceed as described above. Do not forget to indicate this, when filling-in the form for a research place.

After having received an acceptance letter from the Institute, you should take are of your visa , in case that you need one.
Being guest researcher at the Institute does not inclued beeing covered by insurances. Therefore you should get information about the status of your health insurance before starting your travel.

accommodation in Freiburg. It is very important for the Institute to assist its visitors and guest researchers with the matter of accommodation.
Beeing university town, Freiburg enjoys a worldwide recognized reputation and also the Max Planck Institute has its international high reputation. Numerous researchers visit our Institute throughout the whole year. Therefore you should consider while planning your travel arrangements, that the seek for housing especially in the very popular summertime from June to August might develop very complicated and tediously. The reason for this is based on the fact that during these popular summer months the demand for housing climbs over the offer of the housingmarket in its extreme.

As initial help (renting period not longer than 3 monaths) the Institute offers the possibility to rent institute-owned guest apartments in the Fürstenbergstraße or bigger flats in the students area at the Seepark. Furthermore the Institute can arrange contact to other institutions or private landlords offering accommodations.In addition to the institute-owned guestapartments the institute has the right on seven flats of the local student union to schedule them for our guest researchers: 1 one-room-apartment, 3 two-bedroom-flats and 3 three-bedroom-flats.

As the matter of housing appears to be a very individual concern, the Institute takes care to place extensive lists of addresses and valuable Information at its visitor’s disposal.

Please schedule your arrival in order to make it happen during the Service Hours of the reception
When arriving at the Institute please go directly to our Reception.
The Registration or check-in procedure will contain the following steps:
From the receptionist you will receive a token for your do-it-yourself registration at the user terminal.
Afterwards you receive your guest residency contract in order to sign it.
After your registration you will be advised of the library rules (especially those guest researchers, who visit us for the first time) and your research place in the library will be assigned to you.
Afterwards you can apply for an IT-account.
Of course you can bring your own notebook.
In order to be able to use it or to use the provided computer and to have access to the internet, the IT-Department allots a personal user identification to you.
- In case that you intend to use your own E-mail-contact from home, please make sure, that the tecnical possibility is given and that you can provide the corresponding informations (personal user idetification, password and name of the server).
- Please note that the Institute can only provide an E-mail-account of the MPI domaine if your stay will be longer than one year.
- Due to lack of manpower the IT-Department is not in the position to introduce the guest researchers to the handling of computers in general.
Finally back at the reception you will receive an access token/chip for the Institute. In order to give you free access to the main building and the administration building during your stay, you will receive an access token which is personalized on you. For this access token you have to pay a protective charge of 26,- Euro at the reception. This charge will be paid back to you, as soon as you give the access token back before you leave the institute.
